Title: Kirby Fibben Thesis Proposal

Abstract:
Sickle cell disease (SCD) causes complex blood viscosity issues. Current guidelines recommend keeping hemoglobin (Hb) levels below 10 g/dL to prevent hyperviscosity, but this approach inadequately addresses SCD’s diverse complications, such as vaso-occlusive crises and stroke. This proposal seeks to provide data to help refine these guidelines by investigating SCD's blood viscosity dynamics using a 3D microvascular-on-a-chip model. This research aims to improve clinical outcomes by better understanding blood viscosity dynamics in SCD. The results could inform new transfusion guidelines, potentially allowing safer Hb levels above 10 g/dL, enhancing patient care, and reducing complications.
